Your Guide to Metro Travel in the UAE: Tips, Cost, Documents

September 29, 2025

Public transport in the UAE is becoming increasingly convenient, safe and affordable. Among the various options, the Dubai Metro is the top choice for both tourists and locals. It has a convenient route system, multiple user services, and some strict regulations. Qlegal Consultancy will eliminate the consequences if you accidentally disobey any rules. In this article, you will find an overview of the metro system and its policies, as well as practical travel tips and key information about the documents you may need to travel smoothly.

Dubai Metro System

The UAE Metro is a modern, fully automated system controlled by the Department of Transport (RTA). It consists of two main lines — Red and Green — totalling over 80 kilometres, connecting main city areas, shopping centres and landmarks. It plans to broaden the Metro system in the following years to serve even more city spots. Today, the red line runs along the main Sheikh Zayed Road highway, connecting the airport, city centre (including Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall) and Dubai Marina. The green line covers the historic districts (Deira, Bur Dubai). Of course, there are transfer stations where you can change lines if necessary. This metro connection is convenient for tourists, as it is easy to get to the airport and there is no need to create complicated traffic schemes to visit all the sights.

Payment and Cost

The city is divided into special fare zones, and the cost of your trip depends on the number of such zones you travel through. The fare starts at approximately 3 AED (≈1$).

Notice that you won’t be able to pay with your credit card. A NOL transport card is required for travel. There are some types of these cards:

  • Red Ticket. It is for single use or short-term travel.
  • Silver. The most popular one is for daily travel.
  • Gold. It gives access to premium comfort cabins.
  • Blue. It is a personalised card, with discounts for students, retirees, and people with disabilities.

You can buy or top up the card at special ticket machines, station ticket offices, or online. We advise keeping your NOL card balance above the minimum fare to avoid incidental fines. Remember always to tap your card at the gate when entering and exiting to avoid penalties. If you, unfortunately,  face any legal problems and need legal advice, seek legal guidance from a respectable local company.

General Travel Tips

Usually, the Metro works from 5 am till midnight, but on Fridays and weekends, it extends working hours from 5 am till 1 am. Trains come every 3-7 minutes (depending on the time of day). If you want to travel more comfortably and you are not in a hurry, we recommend planning your journey to avoid rush hours (7:30 – 9:30 am and 5 -7 pm approximately). The RTA Dubai app or Google Maps will help you create the right travel timing.

The Dubai Metro is a real example of modern and high-tech public transport. It was created for everyone’s comfort. For instance, it has special cabins for women and children only. It is also an accessible place for all categories of people as it is provided with elevators and wide gates for wheelchairs. Moreover, you may travel with your luggage using separate designated areas for the large suitcase, without causing discomfort for anyone.

On the other hand, eating, drinking or even chewing gum is not allowed inside metro trains. Loud conversations may be considered a breach of the Dubai Metro’s travel regulations. Another tip is to respect local customs and dress modestly.

Required Documents

The main required document for tourists is a passport with a valid visa (or entry stamp). You may not need to show it to board the Metro, but we recommend always carrying it wherever you go. And make sure you have travel insurance if required by your airline or visa type. As for residents, take your Emirates ID as your official document. Sometimes, random bag scans and checks can happen at the metro stations. You may be asked to show your documents (ID or passport) in such cases.

People who have discounts for traveling by Metro, for example, students, senior citizens, and people of determination (disabilities), etc, should carry proof documents for their discounts.

The Dubai Metro is not just a means of transportation but a symbol of modernity, efficiency, and the city’s focus on accessible public services. You can be sure of smooth travel with a valid NOL card, following the rules, and carrying the necessary documents. To have peace of mind, keep in contact with a legal company that speaks your language and provides support to foreign travelers in the UAE. With well-planned routes, affordable fares, and a convenient automated system, the trip to the job or the Dubai sights can be comfortable and safe for both residents and tourists.
